In their previous match, England lost against South Africa by a small margin of 7 runs.

He scored 65 runs off 38 balls to lay the foundation for a big total. However, once he got out, the middle order kept losing wickets in quick succession and South Africa all of a sudden were staring at a low total. David Miller made an important contribution of 43 runs in 28 balls to help South Africa get to 163 in 20 overs of play.

During the chase, England lost Philip Salt early on. The English couldn't really play attacking shots in the powerplay overs and at one point, they were reduced to 61 for 4 in the 11th over. This is when Liam Livingstone and Harry Brook got involved in a partnership of 78 runs for the 5th wicket and got England in a good position to win the match. Untimely dismissals of both Liam Livingstone and Harry Brook cost England the match as they fell short by 7 runs in the end.
