The Melbourne Stars won the toss and chose to take the field first. Martin Guptill began the match with a well-placed off drive, but his partner Sam Harper was dismissed without scoring. Guptill and Shaun Marsh then formed a solid partnership, picking up singles and doubles and hitting the occasional boundary. The partnership was growing, but they were unable to increase the scoring rate significantly.
Guptill was dismissed after scoring 32 runs in 27 deliveries, while Marsh scored 32 runs in 35 deliveries. The Melbourne Stars' decision to bring Trent Boult back into the game paid off as he dismissed the in-form batter Aaron Finch. Jonathan Wells and Mackenzie Harvey then helped to revive the team's fortunes with a strong partnership. However, just as Wells was starting to take control of the game, he was bounced out by Nathan Coulter-Nile.
Mackenzie Harvey remained undefeated, scoring 32 runs off 23 deliveries. Adam Zampa played a key role for the Melbourne Stars both as captain and as a bowler. There was a bit of excitement in the final over when Zampa attempted to run out Tom Rogers at the bowling end, but the third umpire determined that Zampa had completed his bowling action and ruled Rogers not out.
In the end, the Melbourne Stars were able to restrict the Renegades to a total of 141 runs in their 20 overs. Trent Boult and Luke Wood were the standout bowlers, each taking two wickets, while Webster, Coulter-Nile, and Zampa each contributed one wicket. Given the strong batting lineup of the Melbourne Stars, this target should not have been difficult for them to reach.
Run Chase
At the midway point of the game, it appeared that the Melbourne Renegades were around 15 runs shy of a total that they could defend. However, the bowlers put on a brilliant performance, led by an outstanding spell of fast bowling from Tom Rogers. The Renegades managed to restrict the Stars to a total of 108/9 in their 20 overs.
Rogers was motivated by the 'Mankad run-out' incident, late in their innings, and he came out firing. He dismissed Joe Clarke, Beau Webster and Thomas Rogers in his second over. It was a superb display of fast bowling that caught the Stars off guard and that they never really recovered from.
Will Sutherland removed Marcus Stoinis when the score was 18/4. Hilton Cartwright and Nick Larkin attempted to rebuild the innings and shared a 39-run partnership to get the Stars back on track. However, a series of wickets in the latter stages of the match swung the
