Hampshire Hawks came out on top, in the previous edition of the tournament, by just 1 run, as Nathan Ellis did the magic for his team with the ball. Ben McDermott also played a fine innings’ which set the platform for Hampshire to lift the trophy.

There are 18 teams participating in the competition namely Derbyshire, Durham, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Yorkshire, Essex, Glamorgan, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Kent, Middlesex, Somerset, Surrey and Sussex.

The teams are divided into two groups (North Group and South Group) with 9 teams each. The division of the teams in groups looks like:

Points Table
Let's have a look at the composition and strengths of each team:

NORTH GROUP:

1. Birmingham Bears:

Performance in the 2022 edition-
Qualified for the Quarter Finals.

Leading Run Scorer in the previous edition -
Adam Hose (557 runs)

Leading Wicket taker in the previous edition -
Jake Lintott (22 wickets)

Overseas Signings -
Glenn Maxwell (Australia, after IPL commitments with RCB), Hasan Ali (Pakistan), Paul Stirling (Ireland, until Maxwell arrives)

Birmingham Bears will be captained by Moeen Ali. They have a very balanced squad with English power hitter like Rob Yates and Moeen Ali lighting up the middle order. Glenn Maxwell's signing is also a big boost for the Bears. He looks in good touch in IPL 2023 and is expected to deliver in Vitality Blast T20 as well.

Birmingham Bears - Will Rhodes, Henry Brookes, Michael Burgess, Oliver Hannon-Dalby, Sam Hain, Liam Norwell, Robert Yates, Alex Davies, Jacob Bethell, Manraj Johal, Moeen Ali, Ed Barnard, Chris Rushworth, Hassan Ali (Pakistan - until the end of July), Glenn Maxwell (Australia - Vitality Blast)

2. Derbyshire Falcons:

Performance in the 2022 edition- Qualified for the Quarter Finals.

Leading Run Scorer in the previous edition- Shan Masood (547 runs)

Leading Wicket taker in the previous edition - George Scrimshaw (23 wickets)

Overseas Signings - Suranga Lakmal (Sri Lanka), Haider Ali (Pakistan), Zaman Khan (Pakistan)

The inclusion of Haider Ali into the squad adds to the power index of the team's composition. He can hit the ball a long way and Ali's performances on English pitches have been exceptional.

Zaman Khan is also a great pick for the Falcons. He performed superbly in the recently concluded PSL and will look to continue troubling the batters in Vitality Blast T20.

Derbyshire - Billy Godleman, Brooke Guest, Wayne Madsen, Leus du Plooy, Ben Aitchison, Samuel Conners, Dustin Melton, Anuj Dal, Alex Thomson, Suranga Lakmal (Sri Lanka), Haider Ali (Pakistan), Zak Chappell, Matthew Lamb, Mark Watt

Leading Run Scorer in the previous edition - Michael Jones (319 runs)

Leading Wicket taker in the previous edition - Andrew Tye (21 wickets)

Overseas Signings - David Bedingham (South Africa)

Durham does have a few power hitters but they weren't super consistent in the previous edition, the reason why they finished 8th in the league stage. Lack of overseas signings will also haunt them over the course of the league.

Durham - Alex Lees, Cameron Bancroft, Scott Borthwick, Jack Burnham, Ben Raine, Paul Coughlin, Liam Trevaskis, David Bedingham (South Africa), Ollie Robinson, Nathan Sowter, Brandon Glover, Bas de Leede, Matthew Kuhnemann (Australia), Tristan Stubbs (South Africa - Vitality Blast)

Leading Wicket taker in the previous edition - Richard Gleeson (25)

Overseas Signings - Colin de Grandhomme (New Zealand), Daryl Mitchell (New Zealand), Dane Vilas (South Africa)

Lancashire Lightning look a very strong side on papers. They have performed very well over the years and finished as runners up in the previous edition of Vitality Blast T20. With Colin de Grandhomme and Daryl Mitchell arriving from New Zealand, Lancashire are looking an ever so strong squad.

Lancashire - Keaton Jennings, Luke Wells, Josh Bohannon, Liam Livingstone, Steven Croft, Luke Wood, Tom Bailey, Danny Lamb, Phil Salt, James Anderson, Dane Vilas (South Africa), Daryl Mitchell (New Zealand), Colin de Grandhomme (New Zealand)

Leading Wicket taker in the previous edition - Naveen ul Haq (23 wickets)

Overseas Signings - Naveen-ul-Haq (Afghanistan), Wiaan Mulder (South Africa)

Leicestershire Foxes couldn't perform very well in the previous edition of Vitality Blast but they certainly have a good squad. Naveen ul Haq bowled with a lot of fire in 2022 and he will spearhead the bowling for the Foxes. The overseas signing of Wiaan Mulder also gives flexibility and strength to the squad.

Leicestershire - Samuel Evans, Colin Ackermann, Lewis Hill, Rishi Patel, Harry Swindells, Chris Wright, Edward Barnes, Gavin Griffiths, Callum Parkinson, Harry Dearden, Roman Walker, Tom Scriven, Wiaan Mulder (South Africa), Peter Handscomb (Australia - County Championship, April and May), Ajinkya Rahane (India - County Championship and One-Day Cup, June onwards), Naveen-ul-Haq (Afghanistan - Vitality Blast), Sol Budinger, Matt Salisbury

Overseas Signings- Chris Lynn (Australia), Andrew Tye (Australia)

Steelbacks finished at the 7th spot in previous edition. This year, they will enjoy the services of David Willey and Andrew Tye who will boost their bowling. Chris Lynn at the top of the order can be devastating and he will surely be a treat to watch in the competition.

Leading Wicket taker in the previous edition - Jake Ball (18)

Overseas Signings - Dane Paterson (South Africa), Colin Munro (New Zealand), Shaheen Afridi (Pakistan)

Outlaws finished at the 5th position on points table in 2022. This time, Outlaws will enjoy the services of Shaheen Afridi who is in great form. If he gets going, Outlaws will be simply unstoppable.

Nottinghamshire - Ben Slater, Haseeb Hameed, Ben Duckett, Joe Clarke, Lyndon James, Steven Mullaney, Tom Moores, Liam Patterson-White, Luke Fletcher, Olly Stone, Tom Loten, Dane Paterson (South Africa), Colin Munro (New Zealand - Vitality Blast), Shaheen Shah Afridi (Pakistan - Vitality Blast)

Worcestershire - Jake Libby, Jack Haynes, Brett D'Oliveira, Riki Wessels, Ben Cox, Joe Leach, Josh Tongue, Dillon Pennington, Ed Barnard, Taylor Cornall, Ben Gibbon, Ed Pollock, Adam Hose, Matthew Waite, Azhar Ali (Pakistan), Michael Bracewell (New Zealand - Vitality Blast), Mitchell Santner (New Zealand - Vitality Blast)

9. Yorkshire Vikings:

Leading Run Scorer in the previous edition - Adam Lyth (525)

Leading Wicket taker in the previous edition - Jordan Thompson (17 wickets)

Overseas Signings - Shan Masood (Pakistan), David Wiese (Namibia, after IPL commitments with KKR)

Vikings performed very well in the last edition, courtesy Shan Masood who looked very fluent in 2022. They will be missing the likes of Tom Kohler Cadmore, who is a sensation in T20 cricket. With the signing of David Wiese, Vikings have made a good bet.

Yorkshire - Adam Lyth, Harry Brook, Harry Duke, Dominic Bess, Jordan Thompson, Ben Coad, Jonathan Tattersall, Mathew Pillans, Will Fraine, George Hill, Matthew Fisher, Andrew Gale, Matt Milnes, Ben Mike, Jafer Chohan (South Asian Cricket Academy), Shan Masood (Pakistan), Neil Wagner (New Zealand - first 10 County Championship matches), David Wiese (Namibia - Vitality Blast)

Glamorgan caused plenty of upsets in the previous edition. They finished at the 6th position but they can't be written off. With Colin Ingram joining them as an overseas player, Glamorgan look strong both on the bowling as well as batting front.

Glamorgan - David Lloyd, Billy Root, Kiran Carlson, Chris Cooke, Daniel Douthwaite, Michael Neser, Andrew Salter, Timm van der Gugten, Eddie Byrom, James Harris, Sam Northeast, Colin Ingram (South Africa), Marnus Labuschagne (Australia), Michael Neser (Australia), Harry Podmore (Kent), Zain-ul-Hassan (South Asian Cricket Academy)

The departure of stars like Ian Cockbain, Ryan Higgins and Benny Howell will certainly haunt them this season. Glenn Phillips however, adds a lot of firepower in the middle order.

Leading Wicket taker in the previous edition - Qais Ahmad and Grant Stewart (both 14)

Overseas Signings - Kane Richardson (Australia), George Linde (South Africa).

Kent Spitfires finished at the bottom most position last season. The form of their skipper Sam Billings is a concern for the team. However, the signings of Kane Richardson and George Linde adds a lot of variety in the squad.

Kent - Oliver Robinson, Jordan Cox, Jack Leaning, Sam Billings, Daniel Bell-Drummond, Marcus O'Riordan, Nathan Gilchrist, Hamidullah Qadri, Matthew Quinn, Tawanda Muyeye, Heino Kuhn, Joe Denly, Fred Klaassen, Grant Stewart, Ben Compton, Matt Quinn, Joey Evison, Michael Hogan, George Linde (South Africa), Arshdeep Singh (India - five County Championship matches June-July), Kane Richardson (Australia - Vitality Blast)
