Oval Invincibles (Men) vs Trent Rockets (Men), 29th Match, The Hundred Mens

Oval Invincibles (151-5) beat Trent Rockets (148-7) by five wickets

Oval Invincibles skipper Sam Billings steered his side into their first Men’s Hundred final with a display of ruthless hitting to overcome current champions Trent Rockets by five wickets.

Billings, who had endured a lean tournament with the bat – averaging 12.5 in his previous seven innings – rediscovered form just in time to rubber-stamp top spot in the table and an automatic place in Sunday’s final.

He struck 76 not out from 40 balls as the Invincibles chased down their opponents’ total of 148 for seven at the Kia Oval, overcoming a brief wobble after three wickets had fallen in three deliveries to share a partnership of 73 from 40 with Will Jacks.

Billings completed the win with a six off Ish Sodhi to leave the Rockets’ hopes of defending their crown hanging by a thread.

With victory essential, the Rockets opted to bat after winning the toss but none of their top-order batters managed to build on useful starts.

Alex Hales was first to go, holing out to deep third and Joe Root – having reverse-ramped Spencer Johnson for six – was undone by a ball that skidded through to hit the top of middle and off.

Sam Hain’s bustling knock of 16 from 10 came to an end when he slapped a return catch to Adam Zampa and, when fellow leg-spinner Nathan Sowter had Tom Kohler-Cadmore caught in the deep, the visitors were 54 for four.

Colin Munro took on both spinners, dispatching them over the top for sixes and rebuilt the Rockets’ innings in tandem with Lewis Gregory, who capitalised on being dropped at point by Tom Curran to share in a partnership of 70 from 46.

Zampa eventually broke the stand, tempting Munro (36 from 25) with a slower ball that he skied to mid-off and Tom Curran made amends for his earlier fumble during the next set as Gregory (35 from 24) top-edged a paddle to Billings.

A late flurry of boundaries by Daniel Sams, with 19 from nine, boosted the Rockets in the death overs but their total looked unlikely to seriously trouble the home side, particularly after Jason Roy made early inroads with 19 from 13.

Yet Roy’s wicket was the first of three to fall in as many deliveries, including two to Sams as Sodhi took a stunning one-handed catch at full stretch to dismiss Tawanda Muyeye and Sam Curran was castled by the next.

However, Jacks – who had only faced two of the first 20 balls – steadied the ship by drilling Luke Wood over cover for two sixes and Billings then seized control, hammering Sodhi twice into the upper tier at the Vauxhall End.

Billings picked out the gaps expertly, pulling Matt Carter for successive fours, but the stand ended when Jacks chopped on to Sam Cook and Jimmy Neesham’s departure followed with 48 still required.

But Tom Curran kept his captain company with an unbeaten 18 and Billings finished the job in style, with eight balls unused.

Oval Invincibles (Women) vs Trent Rockets (Women), 29th Match, The Hundred Womens

By David Diangienda, Hundred Rising Reporter

Nadine de Klerk’s unbeaten half-century set up a consolation win for outgoing champions Oval Invincibles against Trent Rockets to round off their campaign.

The South African all-rounder hit 51 not out from 25 balls to rescue the Invincibles innings and led them to 155 for six at The Kia Oval.

The Rockets fell just three runs short as late hitting from Alexa Stonehouse threatened to steal away the win after Lizelle Lee’s 61 from 33 at the top of the order.

The Rockets finished off their tournament without former England international Katherine  Sciver-Brunt, who had been due to play her final game before her retirement, but she was ruled out due to a hip injury.

The Rockets struck with the second ball of the innings with Stonehouse found some movement to bowl Lauren Winfield-Hill for a duck.

Stonehouse then bowled Invincibles stand-in captain Suzie Bates in her second set before Alice Capsey got on top of the bowling, hitting Bryony Smith over long-on for six.

But Kirstie Gordon was able to peg the home side back having Marizanne Kapp stumped before Capsey departed for 35 off 24 after missing a sweep at the left-arm spinner.

Paige Scholfield and De Klerk began a rebuilding job as they struck a partnership of 23 from 15, which was ended when the former was bowled aiming an ambitious shot off Naomi Dattani.

But De Klerk accelerated the Invincibles’ score by hitting three consecutive fours as Stonehouse’s final set of five went for 27 and the partnership of 68 from 31 with Cordelia Griffith lifted the home side above 150.

The Rockets got off to a good start as Lee struck a couple of boundaries off Kapp’s first set but Invincibles seamer made the breakthrough by having Smith caught by Bates at long off.

Eva Gray took the key wicket of Harmanpreet Kaur with her second ball, but Lee attacked the bowling aggressively.

The Rockets opener raced to her half-century off 28 balls slamming Ryana McDonald-Gay over mid-wicket for her third six and shared a partnership of 63 from 37 with captain Nat Sciver-Brunt.

That raised hopes for the visitors of reaching the target, but Sciver-Brunt was lbw to Sophia Smale and two balls later Scholfield’s throw on the turn ran out Lee with a direct hit at the bowler’s end.

Scholfield was able to follow up with a nonchalant return catch to dismiss Joanne Gardner.

Smale picked up another wicket as she finished with two for 26 and although, Stonehouse got three boundaries in a row in a nervy finish as the Rockets came up three runs short.

Oval Invincibles’ NADINE de KLERK, who top-scored with 51 from 25 balls in her second Women’s Hundred appearance, said:

“It’s been great to be part of the Hundred and just to finish on a high note in front of a home crowd has been absolutely amazing. When we got to the ground we said ‘although we’re out of the competition, there’s still so much to play for’ and I think the girls showed that today.

“We could have easily given up towards the back end when we got hammered all around the park, but we kept fighting because we didn’t want to disappoint each other and the crowd. It wasn’t our best performance but we’ll take a win any day.

“I felt really calm (batting). There’s always a bit of pressure when you’re an overseas and you have to come and make an impact but the team have made me feel really welcome.

“I’ve never played here before (at the Kia Oval) but it was great fun to get out there and put on a good partnership with Cordelia (Griffith), then some of the others like Alice Capsey who just chipped in helped us along the way.”

Trent Rockets’ LIZELLE LEE, who hit 61 from 33 balls, said:

“I wish it came a bit earlier in the tournament, but I guess that’s cricket. It was not the best tournament, but we came back and that shows that if you don’t win a few in the beginning it makes it a bit harder at the end.”

“That is sort of the trend that we had in our games, we lost a lot of wickets that we didn’t need to and that sort of summed up how the batting went but Nat (Sciver-Brunt) is the best batter around.”

(On Katherine Sciver-Brunt’s retirement and legacy) “We sort of all knew it after the Welsh Fire game. Katherine has done extremely well for women’s cricket.

“She will probably go down as a legend of the game and credit to her for inspiring a lot of young women.”
