London Spirit (Men) vs Northern Superchargers (Men), 24th Match, The Hundred Mens

Ravi Bopara went from villain to hero as London Spirit beat Northern Superchargers by 13 runs at Lord’s to keep alive their hopes of a place in the knockout stages.

The veteran all-rounder dropped a sitter of a catch early in the Superchargers’ chase for 161 but atoned and then some with ball in hand taking 4-21, including the prize wicket of Harry Brook for 44 (from 24 balls) the youngster having played like a man scorned following his omission from England’s World Cup squad earlier this week.

Earlier Adam Rossington made his second 50 of the week (53 from 30), sharing a stand of 66 in 32 balls for the third wicket with Matthew Wade (42) as the home side posted 160-6. Adil Rashid took 2-18 and Topley 2-20 for the visitors.

Zak Crawley struck three fours before becoming Reece Topley’s 11th victim of the tournament caught by David Weise. The England man stood his ground but a check by the third umpire sent him on his way.

Dan Lawrence didn’t stay long, bowled by Rashid attempting a switch hit, but Rossington picked up where he’d left off against the Invincibles on Tuesday, unleashing a flurry of boundaries including a six into the Mound Stand off Weise.

The Essex wicketkeeper followed up with successive sixes off South African Wayne Parnell, the first a towering blow into the pavilion seats as his 50 came up in 25 balls. Rossington’s pyrotechnics inspired Wade who sent one from Matthew Potts over the ropes in taking 20 from one set.

Rossington though lost the strike and with it his rhythm and soon mishit Rashid into the hands of mid-wicket. Wade followed when Parnell trapped him in front and with that Spirit lost momentum, only a late six from Daryl Mitchell (34 from 19) taking them to 160.

Amid darkening skies Lyth began by belting one from Worrall into the stands but he should have been out for eight when skying Jordan Thompson to Bopara at short third, only for the Sussex man to spill the regulation chance. To compound the error Matthew Short sent the next ball into the crowd. Lyth then celebrated his reprieve with a second six off Worrall.

Spirit’s ragged fielding gave Lyth a second life on 25, Nathan Ellis the culprit, but his luck ran out when he sent one from Liam Dawson into the hands of Thompson.

Bopara though bowled  a stunning opening set, first having Short caught in the deep before castling  Tom Banton. Unsurprisingly the all-rounder was kept on for another set and promptly had Saif Zaib caught at short fine.

All eyes were now on Brook who lofted one from Bopara into the crowd before crashing Thompson for three fours in a set.

Critchley was treated with equal disdain, but Bopara returned to dismiss the youngster caught right on the rope by Mitchell.

Hose continued to swing valiantly, but when he fell to Ellis’s stunning diving catch, 24 from the final six proved too many.

London Spirit (Women) vs Northern Superchargers (Women), 24th Match, The Hundred Womens

Amelia Kerr’s heroics with bat and ball proved in vain as London Spirit lost a nail-biter to Northern Superchargers by four wickets to bow out of contention the 2023 Women’s Hundred.

New Zealand all-rounder Kerr struck a magnificent 32-ball 60 with nine fours to carry Spirit to 135-7 in their 100 balls.

She followed that with 2-24 with the ball and Sarah Glenn returned 3-19 as the hosts made a valiant attempt to defend their tally and stay in the tournament.

But in-form Phoebe Lichfield’s 38 from 34 and 30 from Jemimah Rodrigues saw Superchargers to 136-6 as they scraped home to all but book their place in the knockout stages.

Invited to bat, Spirit lost Niamh Holland stumped by Bess Heath off Grace Ballinger and a subdued England skipper Heather Knight took seven balls to get off the mark, meaning only 22 came from the powerplay.

All-rounder Danielle Gibson (24) pulled England quick Kate Cross for six only to be bowled by Georgia Wareham and Grace Harris’s miserable tournament continued as she belted a Linsey Smith full toss straight to mid-wicket.

When Knight was run out Spirit were 53-4, but it was here the Kerr took charge, sweeping beautifully and hitting powerfully down the ground.

Richa Ghosh cleared the ropes at mid-on as the pair added 37 in 26 balls, before the Indian wicketkeeper found the safe hands of Cross from the bowling of Lucy Higham, but Kerr struck three boundaries in a row as 36 came from the final 20 to give the hosts something to bowl at.

Superchargers began scratchily, Marie Kelly feathering one from England quick Lauren Filer through to Ghosh, before in-form Phoebe Litchfield survived an lbw shout by Charlie Dean, the not out call incorrectly reviewed.

Successive fours from Jemimah Rodrigues provided impetus at the back end of the powerplay, and Litchfield carried on the momentum, driving one from Tara Norris straight back over the bowler’s head.

Knight turned to Glenn and Kerr in the hope they would find the same turn extracted by the Superchargers’ spinners. Rodrigues responded by cutting and pulling the New Zealander to the fence twice in a set, but Glenn cut short the fun trapping the overseas star lbw.

Kerr accounted for Hollie Armytage immediately after the strategic time-out, but Litchfield continued on, ramping Filer over the keeper and sweeping Kerr for another four.

Gibson in her turn came in for some heavy treatment from the Australian and Bess Heath celebrated her England call-up by striking the same bowler almost into the Tavern. Heath perished trying to repeat the stroke off Glenn and when Litchfield’s attempted reverse sweep off Kerr failed to go the distance the game was back in the balance.

Davidson-Richards gloved one to give Glenn a third wicket and 15 were needed off the last 10, but Wareham and Cross struck vital fours and Norris dropped the England quick as Superchargers got home with a ball to spare.

London Spirit all-rounder Amelia Kerr said: “I thought we’d got ourselves into a winning position with the ball. Phoebe (Litchfield) and Jemimah (Rodrigues) played really well through the middle, but we were always in the game.

“This tournament seems to be about momentum swings and when you are winning you know how to win in those moments. We probably let ourselves down a bit in the field, but we are all human and make mistakes.

“I just wanted to play my natural game. Probably earlier on in the tournament I went away a bit from that, so it was nice to go out there today and back myself with the bat.

“With the ball you get hit at times, but it is about coming back and realising how important every ball is. You have to have intent and be positive.”

England newbie Bess Heath said: “This game showed the ebbs and flows of cricket, but we have full faith in our batting line-up to come in and finish the game. It got a bit nerve-wracking at the end.

“Phoebe is amazing and is the one I like to watch in the nets as well. She comes in and plays a better switch hit than I’ve ever attempted which is pretty annoying really. She’s a great human as well.

“I found out yesterday(about the England call-up). I didn’t feel any differently going out there today. I’m always a little bit nervous so wanted to focus on the game and win it first and foremost.

“I try and go out with a bit of intent and play my way. Sometimes it comes off and sometimes it doesn’t, but you just have to keep riding it.

“I’m going to go in with an open mind and learn as much as I can. I’ll be around some amazing players so will look to enjoy the experience. I wasn’t expecting this, it’s a lovely surprise and taking some time to sink in.”
