Welsh Fire (Men) vs Trent Rockets (Men), 20th Match, The Hundred Mens
Trent Rockets climbed off the bottom of the table with a nail-biting win over Welsh Fire, as bowler John Turner held his nerve with 14 required from the final five balls.
He finished with superb figures of 1 for 22, while Rockets were able to set a competitive total thanks to New Zealander Colin Munro who smashed 66 off 35 balls after his team had been reduced to 40-4 early on. In the end they reached 152-6.
The defeat is a blow to Fire’s hopes of a top three finish, as they let Rockets off the hook with the ball and never really got going with the bat.
It came down to the last ball with Roelof van der Merwe needing to hit a six to win, but he could only manage a single as Fire finished on 148-6, Joe Clarke top scoring with 54 off 34.
This was billed as Trent Rockets international top order batting against the equally international class of the Welsh Fire bowling attack, and the home side opted to bowl first to unleash that threat.
It went the way of the bowlers early on, England’s David Willey dismissing both openers. Alex Hales got a thin edge through to wicketkeeper Joe, Clarke, a fine diving catch, while Dawid Malan was out LBW trying to guide the ball down to fine leg, a review showing it would have clipped leg stump.
Joe Root started in typically busy fashion and also unfurled the ramp shot he has used so often this summer, but it was to get him out from a Jake Ball slower ball as the lack of pace saw the ball just spoon up to Clarke.
When Roelof van der Merwe got his first ball to turn and dismiss Tom Kohler-Cadmore, trying to force off the back foot, the Rockets were in serious trouble at 40-4 after 41 balls.
Samit Patel hit van der Merwe for a 94 metre six, but then perished next ball trying to repeat the shot, this time top edging into the covers to be caught by Stephen Eskinazi.
Colin Munro should have been run out after a brilliant piece of boundary fielding by Harris Rauf, but Shaheen Shah Afridi tried to through the stumps down when a simple throw through to keeper Clarke would have been enough.
He hit van der Merwe for two big sixes with another six off Rauf taking Munro to his half century off 27 balls. Despite that Pakistan ace Rauf conceded only 19 off his 20 balls.
New Zealander Munro finished on 66 off 35 as he steered his side to a competitive total of 152-6.
Stephen Eskinazi was dropped by Daniel Sams off John Turner on 5, however the bowler was not to be denied when he hit the off stump of Jonny Bairstow, the England man’s second low score out of two games for Welsh Fire as he departed for 3.
Welsh Fire fell behind the required rate early on, struggling particularly against the swing of Luke Wood. The acceleration needed to come, but Eskinazi perished trying to hit Sams over the top, caught by Joe Root coming in from long off.
Luke Wells was dropped by Munro at deep square off Lewis Gregory on 3, but departed for 8 after Sams made no mistake on another skied effort off Ish Sodhi.
Clarke and Tom Abell did not find things easy, but managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over without ever getting ahead of the rate, needing 34 from the final 15 balls.
The first five of those went for no runs, with Abell run out and Clarke given out off the fifth. However it turned out to be a no ball and a free hit, which Clarke hit for six to keep Fire alive needing 26 off the final 10.
Glen Phillips hit 12 of those off Sams before being caught at long off, leaving Clarke and David Willey 14 to get from the final set.
Colin Munro’s match-winning innings of 66 helped propel defending champions Trent Rockets from bottom into the top three in the table, after they had slipped to 40-4.
“When I went in we thought if we could get fifty off fifty balls then we could re-set, we thought 120/130 would be a good total on that wicket,” he said.
“Back of a length was tough to score, but they went to death bowling a little early and gave us some scoring options so we were lucky that happened.
“We had a little bit of luck but we needed it after the last two games. We were happy with 150, it was not a fantastic wicket by any means.
“The way Clarkie (Joe Clarke) played was outstanding and gave them a sniff at the end. They kept coming hard and John Turner bowled really, really well as well.
“We have gone from eighth to third, it is obviously a very tight tournament so every game counts from now on.
“To be brutally honest we probably have not lived up to our own expectations as a team and that can happen, we just have to up the intensity a little bit in all areas.”
Welsh Fire batsman Joe Clarke was left rueing another narrow defeat for his side. “We have had a lot of close games in this competition and if you come out of them on the right side you find yourself at the top of the table,” he said.
“A couple of close ones have not gone away so we are gutted. Colin is a very experienced player, gave himself a platform to strike them at the end and we probably let them get 20 too many and that probably cost us.
“We have two games to go and we have got to win both of them. It is really tight, everyone is in the hunt.
“We get a little bit of a break, we can freshen up and then come back here next Sunday and try to beat London Spirit and then go away to Headingley which looks like a belting batting wicket to put in a performance and try to get through.”
Top Tournament Stats - The Hundred Women's 2023
Welsh Fire (Women) vs Trent Rockets (Women), 20th Match, The Hundred Womens
Welsh Fire captain Tammy Beaumont hit the highest ever score in the Hundred, 118 off 61 balls, steering her team to a record score of 181 for 3 in the Women’s competition.
The England opener’s score topped the 108 by Will Jacks of Oval Invincibles, it was also the first century by a woman in the Hundred and only the third in men’s and women’s combined. The team score of 181 topped the 166 scored by Southern Brave Women against the Welsh Fire two years ago.
The victory puts Welsh Fire back top of the table, a big step towards top three qualification, while for Beaumont it caps a remarkable season after becoming the first English woman to hit a Test double century during an impressive Ashes series.
Trent Rockets chased the record total bravely, opener Bryony Smith hitting 48 off 21 balls, but the scale of the task was always too great as they finished on 140-5.
A record-breaking afternoon at Sophia Gardens started quietly. Beaumont elected to bat first on winning the toss for Welsh Fire.
After a slow start by both Sophia Dunkley and Tammy Beaumont against the swing of Alexa Stonehouse, it was the captain who found her feet first as Beaumont sent the scoreboard whirring with a combination of sweeps, cuts and straight drives.
Beaumont was dropped at deep square leg by Joanne Gardner off the returning Stonehouse when on 33, while Dunkley could have been run out with a direct hit when on 22.
Beaumont brought up her fifty off just 25 balls with another sweep off Kirstie Gordon, scoring at a rate 200 as an example of her more aggressive approach.
Dunkley fell for 24 off 18, trying to sweep the leg spin of Alana King, but there was no slowing of the run rate with Sarah Bryce joining her captain, the hundred coming up off 55 balls.
Beaumont celebrated by hitting four successive fours off Cassidy McCarthy, then survived an LBW decision on review against King. She was given out, but the ball pitched outside leg.
Having taken 20 off a McCarthy set of five balls, Beaumont then scored 22 off a Naomi Dattani set of five. Her century came with a single tucked to square leg, she had more than earned the right to make sure of the landmark off just 52 balls.
After all the records had fallen Beaumont was finally out off the penultimate ball of the innings, caught deep square leg by Gardner off the bowling of Gordon. Sarah Bryce was overshadowed at the other end, but her 31 off 20 was a useful contribution.
It was a day to forget for most of the Rockets bowlers, but King stood out with 1-16 off her 20 balls, Gordon’s 2-27 off 20 balls the next best performance.
It needed something remarkable from the Trent Rockets batting line-up, but Lizelle Lee showed her intent with a straight six second ball of the innings.
Bryony Smith also launched into the Fire bowling, hitting 34 off her first 13 balls. Fire needed wickets and Shabnim Ismail induced a false shot from Lee, caught mid off by Georgia Elwiss for 26 off 24.
That brought Nat Sciver-Brunt to the wicket, but at the other end the Rockets lost Smith as she was well caught by a diving Dunkley at deep midwicket for 48 off 21 balls, Freya Davies the bowler.
Dunkley took an even better reaction catch off her own bowling to dismiss Sciver-Brunt cheaply. Harmanpreet Kaur batted nicely, but Welsh Fire were able to see out the victory in relative comfort.
Record breaker Tammy Beaumont was delighted after hitting the highest individual score in Hundred history, 118 off 61 balls. “It is not something I thought I would do, particularly as this season I have not got past 50 let alone 100.
“It was an amazing moment, especially in front of a home crowd. For two seasons of the Hundred they have had to endure some poor cricket from the men and the women here so we are really keen to put on a show and get more people into cricket in Wales.
“I guess I have got Jon Lewis, the new England coach, to thank. He came in late December last year and really challenged me to change my game, go after bowlers more and I have tried to do that.
“Even he said he was surprised I could do it at this stage of my career, but I am always someone who likes to take on a challenge, it has come off and I am really glad that it did.
“At times I wondered if this would be the end of me, the kids coming up like Alice Capsey and Emma Lamb are absolutely incredible so I am trying to keep up with them.
“There are a lot of reasons for the change of fortunes for the Fire. We had favourable draft picks and used them wisely, brought in a lot of experience and depth, so we have got a really strong squad and tried to create a bit of a family.”
Trent Rockets bowler Alana King conceded just 16 runs off her 20 balls in the record score by Welsh Fire. “It does not matter when we end up on the losing side, but credit to Tammy - she played an exceptional inning today in front of the home crowd.
“This is the year that records keep being broken. It was nice to watch, not so much as the opposition, but she played phenomenally and took her chances.
“There was only one way about it when it came to our run chase and that was to start the way we did, but we could not keep going and we exposed the middle order who have not had as much batting as they would have liked.
“We have to learn from that and regroup over the next few days. We will focus on ourselves and see what we can do better in the three games remaining.”
