Manchester Originals (Men) vs Birmingham Phoenix (Men), 10th Match, The Hundred Mens

Pakistan leg-spinner Usama Mir overshadowed a host of England stars with a quick-fire unbeaten 32 and two wickets to fire Manchester Originals to an impressive 49-run victory over Birmingham Phoenix in tonight’s men’s Hundred clash at Emirates Old Trafford.

Phoenix, captained by Ashes returnee Moeen Ali, crumbled to 111 replying to 160 for eight.

Mir boosted Manchester from number eight with an inventive 14-ball assault and finished with two for 27 from 20 balls as last year’s finalists claimed their first win after an early defeat and No Result.

Ali made one off two balls but did not bowl. He did, however, run out his England white ball captain Jos Buttler for 43 with a direct hit from cover at the non-striker’s end.

It was unclear whether or not Buttler had grounded his bat over the line before it bounced up.

England limited overs fringe quick Richard Gleeson also returned two for 22, including Ali lbw, as he bowled in a match for the first time since January following wrist surgery.

This was Birmingham’s first completed fixture after two No Results.

After being inserted, the Originals were only 26 for one after 25 balls following Phil Salt’s early departure lbw to Adam Milne.

With the score on 50, savvy seamer Benny Howell then struck twice en-route to three for 21 on a used pitch.

Laurie Evans was caught at short fine-leg ramping and Max Holden bowled reverse sweeping for a golden duck.

Buttler continued his encouraging start to the competition with a quartet of boundaries in 33 balls, adding to previous scores of 37 not out and 62.

But Ashton Turner, for 21 like Evans, was caught behind attempting to fend off a vicious Tom Helm bouncer before Buttler’s departure was followed by Paul Walter falling caught at short fine-leg off Howell - 105 for six after 76 balls.

However, significant impetus was added as Mir scooped, ramped and clobbered a six over midwicket off Kane Richardson.

Jamie Overton also powered a useful 22 before being run out as one of two late wickets.

Phoenix’s chase then slipped to 21 for three after 14 balls.

They lost openers Will Smeed and Ben Duckett caught at midwicket against Gleeson and fellow quick Josh Little before the former struck Moeen on the back pad with a searing yorker.

Liam Livingstone and Jamie Smith, the latter twice in two balls, hit sixes to advance. But it was only a brief respite.

Smith was caught at long-on for 15 off Walter’s left-arm seam before Mir had Dan Mousley lbw, leaving Phoenix with a mountain to climb at 64 for five after 47. And it was a task too great.

Mir had compatriot Shadab Khan caught at deep midwicket and Livingstone fell caught and bowled by his Lancashire team-mate Tom Hartley for an innings-high 27.

Hartley finished with a late three for 13 and Ireland’s Little added a second wicket to wrap up victory.

Manchester Originals spinner Tom Hartley said - “It was a tough start for us at Cardiff only playing the 40-ball game, and then the washout the other night – you’re raring to go, you do all your prep and then it’s a no-go in the end.

“Tonight the fans were amazing, really loud and supporting us right throughout the game. I get to win on this ground with Lancashire throughout the summer but to do it in this competition too is even better.

“It’s always nice to play against teammates – you always wonder what they’re going to say about you in team meetings and vice versa when we’re chatting about them. Livvy’s a great man and I’ll remember that wicket for a while I reckon. You can always take those back to the changing room with you.”

Birmingham Phoenix captain Moeen Ali said - “We’ve never actually beaten Manchester – we do find them a tricky side to play against. But also, I thought we were good at the start with our bowling and around the middle of the innings. They just kept going though, and one guy – Usama Mir – played a fantastic knock for them and he kind of took the game away from us.

“It’s nice to run Jos out – he’s rapid between the wickets. I’m surprised it was even that close.

“Even though I’ve done the captaincy for a few years now, it’s difficult because it takes a bit of time to get into it again and get the fielding combinations, etc, right.

On his groin injury picked up in the last Ashes Test, he added: “It’s good enough to play, but I don’t want to aggravate it any more than needs be. It should be fine now. It was just nice to be able to get back out in the field.”

Manchester Originals (Women) vs Birmingham Phoenix (Women), 10th Match, The Hundred Womens

By Nathan Blackwood, Hundred Rising Reporter

Manchester Originals off-spinner Fi Morris claimed the best ever figures in the two-and-a-half-year history of the Hundred, with her five for seven from 16 balls firing her side to a hard-fought victory against Birmingham Phoenix in an entertaining clash at Emirates Old Trafford.

Morris, 29, and England spin star Sophie Ecclestone shared nine wickets as the Phoenix were skittled for just 87 in 96 balls, with captain Ecclestone coming close to achieving the same feat en-route to outstanding figures of four for 11 from 20 balls.

Morris is in her first season with the Originals having previously played for Southern Brave and Welsh Fire, and this was her best return in any form of senior cricket.

It was also the best haul of any bowler in either the women’s or men’s Hundred to date, beating Josh Little’s five for 13 for the Originals men against Oval Invincibles on this ground last August.

All 10 Phoenix wickets fell to spin, with Australian Amanda-Jade Wellington also striking after the visitors had been inserted.

Their collapse from 52 for one proved costly as they lost for the second time in three matches including a No Result.

A tight opening spell from teenage UAE starlet Mahika Gaur, who went for just 18 runs off her 20 balls, set the tone for the Originals in their first non-rain affected fixture following two No Results last week.

Phoenix dug in to see out a powerplay in which they scored just 25 runs for no loss, with boundaries hard to come by early on in the innings.

And it was Ecclestone who eventually got the breakthrough, getting the wicket of her opposite number Eve Jones stumped for 18.

The 24-year old struck again not long after, collecting the wickets of Sophie Devine, Erin Burns and Emily Arlott in a stellar perfomance with the ball.

But she was outshone by her fellow spinner Morris, who skittled the Phoenix batting line-up with the best ever figures in either the men’s or women’s Hundred competition.

The West Midlands outfit were left stunned, with a string of single-digit scores not enough to seriously test the hosts.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for the Originals though, who saw opener Emma Lamb caught behind off the first ball of the innings.

But the anchoring partnership of Laura Wolvaardt and Ami Campbell, who scored 38 and 28 respectively, set the home side up to grab victory with the penultimate ball of the innings.

It finally fell to Kathryn Bryce to secure victory with a boundary through point on the penultimate delivery of the innings, after Phoenix fought back with neat bowling performances from Tess Flintoff and Katie Levick who combined to take three for 22.

The result means that Originals move up to third in the table, while Phoenix sit in sixth and are still yet to claim a win.

Manchester Originals match hero Fi Morris said - “I think it’s probably my best ever day in cricket, to be honest. How the last couple of years have gone, not playing much in last year’s Hundred, to come in and do that first game I’m absolutely buzzing.

“We made it a little bit hard at the end there, but to get the win made it really special.

“I knew I’d got the first women’s five-for, but I didn’t know it was the best in either competition. I’ll take that!

“I got a bit of help from the pitch. Having Sophie (Ecclestone), Wello (Amanda-Jade Wellington) and Mahika (Gaur) bowl so well up front, I kind of had the easy job. All I needed to do was bowl straight, and I seemed to do it alright.”

Birmingham Phoenix bowler Katie Levick said - “It turned into a great game of cricket - another low-scoring thriller. There are small margins. Had we just batted the 100 balls, I think we’d have been in that.

“But the turnaround from our strategic timeout when we were fielding was massive. To take it down to the last ball was real grit and effort that we didn’t show in the first game. We’ve got to be happy with that.

“It was really nice to come out and bowl well in a new team and environment. I feel like I’m proving myself all over again as a cricketer. I want to make an impact every time I come on to bowl. That’s really spurring me on.”
