Suryakumar Yadav leads India to victory with unbeaten 112 in the 3rd T20I against Sri Lanka
India will be pleased with the comprehensive nature of their victory, as well as the confidence and assertiveness they displayed throughout the game.
The return to form of Arshdeep Singh (3-20), who had struggled in the previous match, was also a positive for the team. Despite some initial difficulties in his first over, Singh was able to deliver a strong performance with his slower balls and yorkers.
Match Summary
India 228/5 (20 ov)
Sri Lanka 137/10 (16.4 ov)
Result - India won by 91 runs
After losing wickets in the first six overs of the game, Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill (46) put on 111 runs and establish a strong foundation for India's total of 228-5 in Rajkot.
Suryakumar Yadav scored an impressive 112 not out off 51 balls to help India achieve a total of 228-5 in the decisive third match against Sri Lanka.
Suryakumar Yadav, known for his versatility as a batsman and ability to hit the ball to all parts of the field, scored his third T20 hundred for India in just 45 balls, showcasing his skills as the world's top-ranked batsman in the Twenty20 format.
In the first over of the game, left-arm quick bowler Dilshan Madushanka dismissed Ishan Kishan with a catch at slip by Dhananjaya de Silva, reducing India to 1-1.
Rahul Tripathi, who made his debut in the previous match, responded to the early wicket by hitting three fours in the fifth over, aided by Shubman Gill.
After hitting two successive sixes off fast bowler Chamika Karunaratne, Tripathi was caught out while trying to hit another boundary. He scored 35 runs off 16 deliveries.
Suryakumar took control of the game with his powerful hitting, including three sixes with his signature scoop shot over fine leg. He reached his fifty in just 26 balls.
After scoring three fours and two sixes in his 36-ball knock, Gill was dismissed by leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga. Captain Hardik Pandya also fell shortly thereafter, scoring only four runs.
In order to end India's streak of 11 consecutive series wins at home since February 2019, Sri Lanka needed to score 229 runs in this match, after bouncing back from their opening loss to level the three-match series at 1-1 on Thursday.
Sri Lanka began the game well, with Kusal Mendis appearing to be in good form. However, Pathum Nissanka struggled at the start of the game. In order for Sri Lanka to have a chance at victory, they needed one of their top-order batters to score a significant number of runs. However, this did not happen, as Axar Patel dismissed Mendis, leading to a series of regular wickets for the Indian team. The high required run rate meant that Sri Lanka needed to take risks with their shots, which made it easier for the Indian bowlers to consistently take wickets.
The Sri Lankan batters were unable to hit any sixes and many of their shots were caught by the boundary fielders. The Indian bowlers all performed well, with both the spinners and pacers taking wickets. Captain Hardik Pandya bowled all of his allotted overs, and Umran Malik bowled with high speed. Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, and Dasun Shanaka all made some progress, but none of them were able to score a significant number of runs, leaving Sri Lanka constantly behind in the game.
In addition to the large margin of victory, India will also be pleased with their aggressive and confident attitude throughout the game. The successful return of Arshdeep Singh, who had a poor performance in the previous match, is also a positive for the team. Although he struggled in his first over, Singh was able to deliver a strong performance with his slower balls and yorkers. Overall, India did well in most aspects of the game and deservedly won the series.
