Royal Challengers Bangalore opened their campaign on a high as they eked out a narrow two run win over UP Warriorz in their opening game of Women's Premier League (WPL). The second game of the WPL took place at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday. Bangalore were put into bat after and they managed to score 157 for six. UP Warriorz then failed to chase the target and finished on 155 for seven.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had a torrid start with the bat as they lost three quick wickets. Sophie Devine, skipper Smriti Mandhana and Ellyse Perry were back in the hut for just 53 runs. But after that, debutante Sabbhineni Meghana (53:44b, 7x4, 1x6) and Richa Ghosh (62:37b, 12x4) bailed the team out of trouble and put them in a decent position. Based on their 71-run stand, RCB posted a total of 157 for six on the board. For UP Warriorz, Rajeshwari Gayakwad picked two wickets.
UP Warriorz lost skipper Alyssa Healy for five runs in the second over of the chase. But Vrinda Dinesh (18:28b, 3x4) and Tahlia McGrath (22:18b, 2x4, 1x6) stitched 38 runs together for the second wicket. However, they both lost their wickets in the span of two balls as the team was reduced to 49 for three. Grace Harris (38:23b, 4x4, 2x6) and Shewta Sehrawat (31:25b, 2x4, 1x6) steadied the ship for the team with their 77-run stand. After the duo got out in the 17th over, the game went down to the last over. With 11 runs needed in the last over, Sophie Molineux gave away just two runs in the first four balls. Even though Deepti Sharma (13 not out:9b, 2x4) hit a boundary on the fifth ball, the RCB bowler held her nerve and won the game for her team by two runs.
