Birmingham Phoenix blazed belatedly into form in the Men’s Hundred, signing off their campaign with a 77-run win over London Spirit at Edgbaston.
Phoenix at last delivered the collective batting power display which has eluded them until the last game, piling up 185 for five, led by Jamie Smith (52, 31 balls) and Ben Duckett (47, 33).
Spirit were then sentenced to their fifth defeat of a disappointing campaign by a sensational opening burst from Adam Milne. The Black Caps paceman took three for two with his first nine balls on his way to figures of four for 20 and Tanveer Sangha added three for 15 as Spirit folded for 108 all out in 89 balls.
Phoenix’s victory prevented them ending up with the wooden spoon which now rests with Northern Superchargers.
After choosing to field, Spirit took a wicket first ball when Will Smeed chopped Tim Southee to short third man, but their next successes were long coming. Smith and Duckett added 94 in 54 balls and then Duckett and Moeen Ali crashed 51 in 21.
Smith timed the ball beautifully in a 30-ball half-century while Moeen smote four sixes in a violent cameo before sending up a skier off the steady Southee. Moeen departed with just 88 runs in six innings in this year’s Hundred behind him.
Four balls later, Duckett top-edged a simple catch to wicketkeeper Matthew Wade but less enjoyable for Southee, who ended with three for 23, was the sight of Benny Howell planting him miles over mid-wicket. Howell’s ten-ball 23 rounded off much Phoenix’s best batting display of the tournament.
Milne then delivered a brilliant opening burst in which he removed Zak Crawley, played on, Michael Pepper, caught behind, and Matthew Wade, bowled by a beauty. Nine balls into their reply, Spirit were broken.
Milne added a fourth victim when Dan Lawrence chipped to mid on. Daniel Bell-Drummond (23, 14 balls) made it into double figures, the only top-five batter to do so, but then charged and missed at Tanveer Sangha.
Daryl Mitchell averted total embarrassment for his side with a beefy 57 (35 balls) but the fact that nine Spirit batters scored 22 between them said everything about their feeble display.
Phoenix bowler Adam Milne said:
"The batters went out there, set the tempo and got a really good score. Jamie Smith batted really well. It was similar to how we batted in the first year maybe when one guy would get a bit of a score and then others would power through, hit some boundaries and get us up to a really good total.
"It's a shame we haven't played like that the whole comp but in the shortest format sometimes you can just flow through a bit of form, and it just wasn't our tournament this year.
"To come out, under the lights and bowl well and get it swinging around and take those wickets was really nice. I felt good in the Oval game as well. It always looks nice when it's swinging around and you can get past the bat. Tanveer and Liam took some wickets in the middle which always helps as well.
"I've loved this tournament. I enjoy playing for Birmingham under Dan Vettori. He's a very relaxed coach and even this year when it wasn't going well, we didn't get too out of control - he just stays relaxed and we try and get those performances out there. Again, it wasn't our season but we have shown in a couple of games what we're capable of."
Spirit batter Daryl Mitchell said:
"I thought we actually bowled really well for periods but they've built partnerships on what was quite a slow and turning wicket. We still thought we could chase it if we could build some partnerships early but I guess that powerplay at the start made it pretty difficult.
"Adam Milne bowled superbly and I guess part of me was pretty happy with that, as a fellow Kiwi with what's coming up in the next few weeks. He's bowling quick and he's swinging the nut and that's all you can hope for as an opening bowler.
"I have enjoyed my time over here. I've been over here for a few months now with Lancashire and now London Spirit and I've loved the experience of playing in England again.
"That's the nature of franchise tournaments sometimes, when there is only eight games. We've had two washouts and two last-over losses and if you count all those the other way, we'd be right up the top. That's the nature of the game, you lose little moments here and there and they cost you in the long run."

London Spirit rounded off their low-key Women’s Hundred campaign on a high with a commanding win as they hammered Birmingham Phoenix by 73 runs at Edgbaston.
Grace Harris’ belligerent 87 (47 balls) lifted Spirit to 172 for five after they were put in by a Phoenix side already doomed to finish bottom of the table. Harris and Richa Ghosh (29, 17 balls) thrashed 48 in 25 balls to ensure a daunting target.
Phoenix replied with 99 all out in 76 balls (Amelia Kerr four for 13) as Spirit ended their staccato campaign with a second win to go alongside four defeats and two ‘no results.’ For Phoenix, the drubbing was one final instalment of a nightmare which has seen them lose seven with one washout.
In a gesture which rather summed up Phoenix’s accident-prone campaign, the main scoreboard at Edgbaston went ‘phut’ just before the start of the match and remained blank throughout the first innings. It missed a perky start from Spirit openers Danielle Gibson and Harris who added 46 in 20 balls. Gibson struck four of the ten balls she faced for four before being yorked by Charis Pavely.
Kerr chipped to mid on and Sophie Luff was well-held by Issy Wong at deep square but Harris advanced to a 31-ball half-century, reached with her tenth four, a sweet sweep which crested the rope in front of the dormant scoreboard. The Australian celebrated with successive sixes, off Erin Burns and Sophie Devine, and Ghosh also cleared the ropes in a blitz which brought 19 runs in four balls.
Ghosh was run out after a mix-up but Harris continued to bat with power and purpose, adding 13 fours to her two sixes before she was run out off the final ball of the innings.
Phoenix needed something spectacular with the bat but lost their top five in 45 balls. Devine was superbly caught by Kerr at deep square from the third ball of the innings and Tess Flintoff was bowled, sweeping at Charlie Dean.
Sterre Kalis’ counter-attack (28, 16 balls) was ended by an lbw decision for Sarah Glenn before Kerr took two big wickets in five balls. Amy Jones was caught by Dean at extra cover and Burns sought six over long on but found only Gibson right on the rope.
That left Phoenix skipper Eve Jones with 104 to find from 55 balls and only the lower order for company. Her departure, bowled through a slog at Kerr, only accelerated the procession and when the ubiquitous Kerr caught Wong at long on, Spirit were home and dry and left to ponder what might have been if they had produced performances of this power earlier in the tournament.
Phoenix captain Eve Jones said:
"The five games previous to this one we have played some competitive cricket and been in every game and got down to the last ball, but today was disappointing, We just wanted to come out and get a win on the board and finish on a high but it wasn't to be.
"It was a really good pitch and they got a very good score on it which meant there was pressure on our batters from ball one. Sterre batted really well in the powerplay but losing those early wickets wasn't helpful and when you start getting behind the rate, the pressure only increases..
"We haven't had a great season and it was disappointing to finish like that. Momentum is so important in a comp like this. If we had won one of those early games and managed to get over the line, we probably would have got on a roll and who knows where they would have taken us. We had quite a few close games but just couldn't get over the line.
"I feel like I have aged about ten years in the last three or four weeks. I'm not going to lie, it's been really difficult. I came into this not expecting to captain and then unfortunately Pez got pulled out a couple of days before the start. I was really excited about the opportunity to captain and it's been a great honour but I feel I've aged a lot! It hasn't been great for us a team but we have some really good young players and they will show how good they are in years to come."
Spirit all-rounder Amelia Kerr said:
"It's nice to finish with a win. With bat, ball and in the field it was really pleasing. We probably hadn't had a complete performance until today and it is always nice to finish on a high.
"Grace Harris and Danny Gibson really set the tone for us with the bat and then Grace batting through was unbelievable. When you put a big total like that on the board, teams have to come hard and that brings opportunities for the bowlers and that's what happened today.
"It was an awesome way to go into the second innings with Grace having batted so well. Then we quickly got among the wickets and when you are constantly picking up wickets in a run-chase it makes it hard for batters coming in and starting.
"Sometimes it's your day and sometimes it's not and it was nice for me to get among the wickets today. It was a great team performance and we know how good we are as a team, when you look at us on paper, we've got so much talent and are led extremely well by Heather. I guess it's disappointing that we didn't do this earlier but then we had so many close games which could have gone either way. We didn't play our best cricket which was frustrating at times, but we are human and doing our best and it was pleasing to pull out this performance today."
