Match Analysis

Three wickets apiece by Sisanda Magala and Tabraiz Shamsi followed by a powerful unbeaten 90 from captain Temba Bavuma set the Proteas on their way to a comfortable eight wicket win over the Netherlands in the second Betway One-Day International in Benoni on Friday.

There was also a forceful half-century from T20 International skipper Aiden Markram at Willowmoore Park where the hosts move 1-0 up in the three-match series and one step closer to automatic qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup in India later this year.

Despite the exploits of the two white-ball captains, in essence this victory was set up by the bowlers, who hit back after a good start by the tourists to restrict them to 189 all out. Magala used the conditions well to finish with three for 37 and win the Player of the Match award, while Shamsi was also excellent in picking up three for 25.

The Proteas won the toss at the start, and with rain forecast, they opted to bowl first. Openers Vikramjit Singh (45) and Max O'Dowd (18) put on a solid 58 for the opening wicket, before both fell to Magala.

Anrich Nortje (2/24) then knocked over Wesley Barresi (7) and captain Scott Edwards (5) to leave the Dutch on 94 for four. That was when Shamsi got in on the act and cramped Musa Ahmed (17) for room to leave the away side in further strife just after crossing 100.

Teja Nidamanuru (48) did his best to rebuild, but lost wickets around him in an effort to rebuild.

Shamsi claimed two of the last five wickets to fall, with top-scorer Nidamanuru drawn into an edge off Magala with the score on 178. The tail offered little resistance and the visitors were bowled out in 46.1 overs.

The chase by the Proteas began poorly with Quinton de Kock top-edging to backward square leg for five to leave the score on 18 for one. However, Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen (31) combined for a 70-run stand in just over 13 overs to put their side in command. And even though the latter was removed, Bavuma kept going on a ground where he scored a century on debut against Ireland in September 2016.

He fell 10 short this time, but his 90* (79 balls, 8 fours, 1 six) was equally impressive as he combined with Markram (51* off 39 balls, 7 fours, 1 six) for an unbroken 102-run third-wicket stand that drove their side to victory with 20 overs to spare.

The result means South Africa are now level on points with West Indies on the ICC World Cup Super League table with the chance to move clear when they face the Dutch in the Betway Pink ODI at DP World Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday.
