Match Report
Asked to bat, India posted 191 for six in their 20 overs and in response New Zealand was bowled out for 126 in 18.5 overs.
Earlier, India was well served by useful partnerships at the top of the order. Ishan Kishan put on useful stands with fellow opener Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav. Then Yadav took charge of the innings in the company of the captain Hardik Pandya. Yadav played with gay abandon as he added 82 runs for the fourth wicket with Pandya. Yadav finished unbeaten on 111 off 51 balls with 11 boundaries and seven sixes. This was Yadav's second T20I hundred in 2022. In the end India finished on 191 for six in their 20 overs. New Zealand's senior bowler Tim Southee picked up a hat-trick in the final over of the Indian innings, his second in the format. For New Zealand the successful bowlers were Southee (3-34) and Lockie Ferguson (2-49).
In their response, New Zealand was well served by a 56 run second wicket stand between Devon Conway and captain Kane Williamson. The scoring was below par and that put pressure on the rest of the batting order. The innings slowly went into a tailspin as New Zealand were reduced to 99 for six. It was then a question of time as India tightened the screws with their spinners. In the end Williamson finished on 61 of 52 balls with four boundaries and two sixes. New Zealand was bowled out for 126 in 18.5 overs. For India the best bowlers were Deepak Hooda (4-10), Yuzvendra Chahal (2-26) and Mohammed Siraj (2-24).
The third and final T20I will be played on Tuesday at Napier. The first T20I at Wellington was washed out without ball being bowled out.
