There were wins for Namibia and Netherlands on Day 1 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

 

ICC Men's T20 World Cup - Namibia vs Sri Lanka, 1st Match

Namibia inflicted a major upset in the opening game of ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022 when they beat Sri Lanka by 55 runs at Geelong on Sunday morning.

Asked to bat first, Namibia posted 163 for seven in their 20 overs and in response bowled out Sri Lanka for a mere 108 in 19 overs.

Earlier, Namibia lost their top-order cheaply as they were struggling at 35 for three. Then there was a 41 run stand for the fourth wicket between captain Gerhard Erasmus and Stephan Baard. Thereafter, there was a collapse again. Then a 70 run stand for the seventh wicket revived Namibia. This stand was between Jan Frylinck (44) and JJ Smit (31 n.o.). Namibia ended on 163 for seven in their 20 overs. For Sri Lanka, Pramod Madushan (2-37) was the best bowler.

In their response, Sri Lanka lost wickets at regular intervals. They were reduced to 40 for four and then they lost wickets regularly. There was a brief resistance when captain Dasun Shanaka (29) and Bhanuka Rajapaksa added 34 runs for the fifth wicket. But apart from that there was nothing much of note from the other Sri Lankan batters. Sri Lanka was bowled lout for 108 in 19 overs. For Namibia David Wiese (2-16), Bernard Scholtz (2-18), Ben Shikongo (2-22) and Jan Frylinck (2-26) were the best bowlers.

 

ICC Men's T20 World Cup – UAE v Netherlands, 2nd Match

Netherlands got their T20 World Cup 2022 campaign off in fine style as they beat UAE by three wickets with one ball to spare in a first round Group A match at Geelong on Sunday afternoon.

Asked to bat, United Arab Emirates (UAE) posted 111 for eight in their 20 overs and in response Netherlands chased down the target in 19.5 overs to finish on 112 for seven.

UAE started off briskly with a 33 run opening stand between Muhammad Waseem (41) and Chirag Suri. But thereafter the innings lost momentum as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Waseem added 32 runs for the third wicket with Vriitya Aravind. But the innings slipped from 91 for two to 111 for eight in their 20 overs. For Netherlands the best bowlers were Bas de Leede (3-19) and Fred Klaassen (2-13).

In their response, Netherlands lost wickets at regular intervals. The innings was struggling a bit at 59 for three. Then the innings lost momentum as they went from 71 for three to 76 for six. But captain Scott Edwards held the innings together as he added 27 runs for the seventh wicket with Tim Pringle. In the end Netherlands chased down the target in 19.5 overs to finish on 112 for seven. For UAE the best bowler was Junaid Siddique (3-24).
